Negotiating Tips

Preparation is key to whatever you do – and the recent mistake on the Apprentice where the all British pies were named Columbus showed up how a simple thing can make a massive difference.

Christopher Columbus was of course Italian, which we knew :-) but the Apprentices didn’t.

When you prepare for a meeting, a negotiation or a presentation make sure you have covered all the bases. Proper preparation prevents pretty poor performance!

When you go abroad check the local cultures. In California it is a good idea to tip the bar person if you want another drink later. They get paid often only in tips.

I spoke a couple of weeks for the James Caan (of Dragons Den fame), Entrepreneurs Academy, as a millionaire’s mentor. Great fun and lovely people, up for learning as much as possible in our day’s masterclass on “Making more money by Professional Negotiating”
Some people didn’t believe me that the Columbo close is a wide spread negotiating tactic around the world. Come on get real, even the TV companies turn the sound up on your TV when you adverts come on – so you don’t miss anything. We are being manipulated all the time.

Columbo is referred to in Power Negotiating – tactics section page 124

I am running an open programme in November, again let me know if you or your firm want more details
