Speaking with an Interpreter on Negotiating
October 30, 2011
Speaking in Slovenia last week, I found the people amazing. The interpreter was brilliant for the small minority who didn’t speak fluent English. Slovenia as you probably know is a small EU country with 2m people, formally part of Yugoslavia. They make every headlamp for Nissan cars produced in the UK and cannot keep up with the production success in Sunderland. There will be 100000 extra Qushqai’s built next year here in the UK, you don’t hear that on the news.
The challenge in running an interactive Masterclass from the stage with 155 people was, I was getting fantastic body language from 90% of the audience BUT the other 10% didn’t understand a word. So with the body language encouraging me, I kept forgetting to stop to allow the interpreter to interpret.
Branka the interpreter was professional and kept me on track. It just goes to show the value of preparation. The week before we had a one hour Skype, to understand each other, the material and how we would run the interactive simulation.
