Negotiation
Car Insurance
October 5, 2006
Today my car insurance came through at £937 for renewal – as it is a pretty sporty car – lexus SC 430 – I thought well OK. Then I decided tob try someone else and they came down to £790 – then the original insurance co. price matched and came in lower at £650 for some reason.
I was going to take it but Mark my son tried Direct line for me – and they did it for £402. My original company wanted evidence that I had it for £402. They were trying to rip me off for £937 2 hours before – I told them to what to do. Two learning points – my son is a better negotiator than me and integrity is in short supply by companies.
Make sure you shop around.

Good work Derek! before I read this I had a similar experience. Although less sporty, my Toyota Yaris renewal came up for £496 (last years price £569, which I had cut them down from £649). I called them up and suggested that I wanted to stay with them but was looking for a more competitive quote as I was a “loyal” (1 years insurance!) customer. Asking if they could do better, I was told “no”, so I used the “surely you have the authority to offer discounts to loyal customers” (made the sales rep feel important) and 2 minutes later the quote was down to £445. 2 days later I called them back again and got them down to £435. Happy with the £61 saving for 15 minutes work! All of the above were skills learnt at one of your seminars on negotiation skills. Ryan P
