Negotiation
BBC Radio London Haggling advice – Derek Arden
March 3, 2009
I appeared on Drive Time with Eddie Nestor last night. Eddie has won awards for broadcasting and is a cool presenter. The objectives were to help listeners with their haggling techniques and reduce their costs. I presented Eddie with a mature student discount card and dared him to use it. I don’t think he will. See clip http://www.youtube.com/derekarden
We had questions from how do you haggle with a Porsche main dealer (you don’t) you buy your replacement tyres elsewhere at half the price; to how do you haggle when you have found the dream dress that you have always wanted. Answer – you have to have other options in the eyes of the person who is selling it to you. Otherwise you will leak positive body language signals. I like the dress and it is between this one and the one down the high street. If you could let me have say 10% then I will go with this one.
Haggling is easy, you have to get yourself in the right frame of mind, pick someone who looks like they have authority and ask them “how they can help you with the price. It was a little bit more than I was expecting to pay. The budget won’t stretch that far, but this is one I want etc “
I am looking forward to my next haggling session with Eddie, watch this space
