Negotiation

Negotiaing with yourself

Negotiating with yourself is the first chapter of my book. A number of people ask me what is the point of this chapter or even the statement. Well before you can sort others out or feel confident you have to sort yourself out, get the right mindset, make sure you are talking to yourself in a positive way and you are believing you can do it. There are numerous ways of doing this – however one of the most successful ones is to recall memories of when you were successful before, how you over came hurdles and did something similar before. This is called firing triggers and anchors in psychological terms.

Yesterday the England cricket team over came that by batting to 517-1, Strauss, Cook and Trott battled at Brisbane to force a draw out of Australia a feat that most newspapers and commentators said was impossible on the last day of test match, on a ground where no one had won in twenty years. Make sure your self talk is negotiating in your head with that demon who tends to say you won’t do it.

A good reminder for a cold start here in UK Derek. Often when people start to negotiate they freeze – just like our current weather.
Your negotiation tips are easy to put into practice and as I have been heard to say, “check where your self-talk is taking you…”
Thanks for posting Mr Negotiation :)

Thanks- Eilidh – People do freeze when they negotiate – we need to help them structure their targets and goals – that would be their anti-freeze :-)
